AFC West: facts drawn from the play-by-play.

One division, two dynasties: 1999–2025 split almost perfectly between Denver and Kansas City.

Across 27 seasons the AFC West has been a two-team conversation: the Chiefs and Broncos have combined for 20 of 27 division titles (74%) and 4 of the division's 5 Super Bowl wins. The Raiders own 3 of those titles in the early 2000s (2000–02) and the Chargers ruled the late 2000s (5 titles 2004–09), but neither has reached a Super Bowl since 2002. Kansas City's lead is built almost entirely in the last decade — they had just 3 titles before 2016.

Kansas City won the division 9 years in a row (2016–2024) — the longest active streak in the NFL.

202311–6DEN/LV 8–93 games
202415–2LAC 11–64 games

Nine straight titles, 117–41 cumulative regular-season record (.741), three Super Bowl wins. KC went 35–7 in intra-division games during 2018–2024 — 12–2 vs the Raiders, 12–2 vs Denver, 11–3 vs the Chargers. Two of the nine titles came on tiebreakers (over a 12-win Raiders team in 2016, over a 12-win Chargers team in 2018), but seven were outright. For context, the previous longest AFC West streak in the database era was Denver's 4 in a row (2012–2015) during the Manning years.

2025 broke the dynasty: Denver won the division at 14–3, Kansas City finished last at 6–11.

Las Vegas3–1414.225.4−11.2

After 9 straight division titles and a +5.8 average margin from 2016–2024, the Chiefs collapsed to 6–11 and last place. The strangeness: their average scoring margin was still +2.0 per game — they were getting outplayed in the close games, not blown out. Denver, which had finished above .500 just twice in the previous 9 years, jumped from 10–7 in 2024 straight to 14–3 — the franchise's best record since Peyton Manning's 2013 team. Even the Chargers (11–6) finished ahead of KC. Three teams above .500 with the Chiefs in last is a configuration the AFC West hadn't seen in the database era.

Peyton Manning's 4-year Denver run scored more points than any AFC West team has scored since.

201313–36065,47755
201412–44824,72739
201512–43552,2499

The 2013 Broncos scored 606 points in 16 games (37.9 PPG) — still the NFL single-season record and the highest scoring season by any AFC West team in the database. Manning's 5,477 yards and 55 TDs that year set NFL single-season passing records that stood until Burrow broke yards in 2024.

The arc collapsed fast: 2015 Manning threw 9 TDs vs 17 INTs in 10 games as the offense was carried by an all-time defense — and Denver still won the Super Bowl. Four straight division titles, two Super Bowl appearances, one ring. The Manning era is the only multi-year run of AFC West dominance that rivals Mahomes-era KC.

All-time intra-division pecking order — then the gap explodes after 2016.

LA Chargers (incl. SD)79–83.48826–34.433
Las Vegas (incl. OAK)63–99.38924–36.400

All-time the Chiefs lead intra-division play but only by 17 games over the Broncos (96–66 vs 86–76). Cut the window to 2016+ and KC has won 78% of division games while the other three sit between 38% and 43% — a near-perfect three-way tie underneath the dynasty.

The Raiders' all-time .389 is the worst of the four. Even with their three early-2000s titles, they have fewer division wins than losses in every multi-year window since the Jon Gruden trade in 2002.

AFC West teams have appeared in 8 Super Bowls since 1999 — Kansas City is in 5 of them.

Five of those eight appearances are Kansas City — all five in the last 6 years (2019–2024). KC went 3–2 in those Super Bowls, the only AFC West team with multiple wins this century. The 2022 KC team is the only one of the eight to win after trailing in the 4th quarter (38–35 over Philly).

The Chargers haven't reached a Super Bowl since the 1994 season (pre-database). Among AFC West franchises, they're the only one with a Super Bowl appearance drought longer than 30 years.
