Game recap
Cardinals @ Chargers
2026 Wk 1 · LAC 14, ARI 26
A two-point lead with 12 minutes left is close to even; a two-score lead with 11 minutes left is close to a finished game. The block did that conversion in 40 seconds of game clock without Arizona's offense having to drive. The Chargers' next two possessions ended in an interception and a turnover on downs, so the block was the last moment the game was in reach.
A blocked punt at the 3: no fourth-quarter block in a game within 3 points has set up a shorter field since 1999
RareArizona led 16-14 with 12:28 left when J.K. Scott lined up to punt from the Chargers' 19. Simi Fehoko blocked it and Alec Ingold recovered for Los Angeles at its own 3, short of the line to gain. Two snaps later Jacoby Brissett hit Trey McBride for a 3-yard touchdown and a 23-14 lead. The block cost the Chargers 14.6 points of win probability, the largest swing of any play in the game.

Eleven punts have been blocked in the fourth quarter of a regular-season game with the score within 3 points since 1999. The blocking team's next snap in those games started anywhere from its own 24 to the opponent's 11. Arizona's started at the 3.
Why it matters.
The Chargers converted two third downs all afternoon. Both were touchdowns. The other six produced nothing.

Los Angeles converted 46.0% of its third downs in 2025, fourth in the league, against an Arizona defense that allowed 44.8%, 29th. In this game the Chargers went 2 of 8, and both conversions came from inside the Arizona 10 and scored. Arizona's offense went 6 of 13.
Why it matters. Third down was the one place the 2025 Chargers offense was a top-five unit, and it was the one place the 2025 Cardinals defense was bottom-five. The matchup pointed one way and the game went the other. Eight third downs is also a very small number of chances; a team that runs 51 plays does not get many, and losing six of them is how a 22:29 time-of-possession afternoon happens.
Arizona's 23rd-ranked offense of 2025 posted +0.144 EPA per play. Only two teams beat that over all of last season.

Arizona and Los Angeles finished 2025 two spots apart near the bottom of the league, at -0.019 and -0.023 EPA per play. Arizona's +0.144 in this game would have trailed only New England and the Rams over a full 2025 season, and it came against a Chargers defense that allowed -0.083 per play last year, seventh best in the league. The Chargers' own offense fell to -0.244.
Why it matters. EPA per play measures how much each snap moved a team toward points, so a swing from -0.019 to +0.144 means the Cardinals gained roughly a sixth of a point more per play than their 2025 self. Over 69 plays that is about 11 expected points, close to the final 12-point margin. One game is one game, and the number will regress, but the direction matters more for Arizona because it came against a top-10 defense rather than a weak one.
Arizona held the ball for 37:31 and ran 69 plays to 51, the Chargers' sixth-fewest snaps in any game since 2020

Arizona's first half was the whole game on offense: 36 plays at +0.303 EPA per play, 232 yards and 13 first downs. After halftime the Cardinals fell to -0.029 and did not need more, because the Chargers' second half was worse: 29 plays at -0.396 with two sacks and an interception. Los Angeles held the ball for 22:29 by game clock.
Why it matters. A 69-to-51 play gap is the mechanism behind a 12-point win with only two touchdowns. Arizona did not need explosive plays because it kept the Chargers' offense on the sideline, and Los Angeles ran so few snaps that six failed third downs were enough to sink the afternoon. The second-half numbers show the Cardinals' offense cooling off did not matter; the Chargers never got the volume to make it matter.
McBride's 18 games of 8+ catches from 2023 to 2025 are twice any other tight end's. He opened 2026 with another.

Cardinals tight ends with an 8-catch game, 1999 to 2025 regular seasons
| Tight end | Games | First | Last |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trey McBride | 18 | 2023 | 2025 |
| Zach Ertz | 3 | 2021 | 2022 |
| Rob Housler | 1 | 2012 | 2012 |
Over the 2023, 2024 and 2025 regular seasons McBride had 18 games with at least 8 catches; Travis Kelce was next at 9. In this game he was targeted 13 times, caught 9 for 95 yards, and scored the touchdown that made it 23-14, so he opened 2026 with another. Before McBride arrived, Cardinals tight ends had produced four such games in the 24 seasons since 1999.
Why it matters. Volume at tight end is usually a symptom of a thin receiver room, but 18 games at this level over three full seasons is a structural choice: Arizona runs its passing game through McBride. In this game he drew 13 of Brissett's 37 attempts, the most of any Cardinal. A new quarterback did not change the target hierarchy.
The Chargers never led. Their win probability peaked at 68.8% one snap before Omarion Hampton's fumble.

Los Angeles was never in front on any of the game's plays. Its best moment came at 13:42 of the second quarter, tied 7-7 with first down at the Arizona 30, when the model gave the Chargers a 68.8% chance to win. On the next snap Andrew Wingard stripped Hampton and Will Johnson recovered. Ten possessions produced two touchdowns, two punts, a blocked punt, a fumble, an interception and three turnovers on downs. Arizona scored 13 points on the possessions that followed the fumble, the block and the fourth-and-18 stop.
Why it matters. The game did not turn on one play so much as on Los Angeles handing the ball back five times without a punt. Two of those came inside the Arizona 35 in a tied or one-score game, which is how a 68.8% win chance fell as low as 31.1% before halftime. Arizona's offense only had to convert short fields and long clock, and it did: three of its four field goals and its second touchdown came directly after a Chargers giveaway.
Arizona's three previous wins over the Chargers came by a combined 6 points. This one came by 12.

Nine meetings since 2001, and the Chargers now lead the series 5-4. Arizona's earlier wins were by 3, 1 and 2 points. The 26 points are also the most the Cardinals have scored against the Chargers in any of the nine games; the previous high was 24 in a 2022 loss. The Chargers' five wins include two blowouts of 31 and 35 points, so the series has been either very close or very one-sided, and this was the first time the one-sided result went Arizona's way.
Why it matters. Arizona had never won one of these games by more than a field goal, so the margin matters more than the win. A 12-point road result against a franchise that held the Cardinals to 10 points in both 2010 and 2018 is a different kind of outcome than the 2014 and 2024 squeakers. It is also Arizona's first road win in the series since 2001.
