Game recap

Buccaneers @ Bengals

2026 Wk 1 · CIN 33, TB 27

Cincinnati's offense produced only two touchdowns on its own drives, and both came right after a recovery: one started at the Tampa Bay 33, the other after the touchback. Take the fumbles away and the Bengals offense scored 9 points. Four lost fumbles is a 1-in-440 team-game event, and a team that does it almost never wins; Tampa Bay was still within 6 with 3:25 left, and never touched the ball again because Cincinnati converted three first downs and knelt.

Three straight Tampa Bay possessions ended in lost fumbles. Cincinnati scored a touchdown off each one.

Rare

Tampa Bay's second, third, and fourth possessions all ended with a Cincinnati recovery, and the Bengals scored a touchdown after every one: Demetrius Knight Jr.'s 27-yard return on the first, a 7-play drive to Mike Gesicki after the second, and a 12-play, 80-yard drive to Chase Brown's 5-yard run after the third. A fourth lost fumble in the fourth quarter set up the 32-yard field goal. 24 of Cincinnati's 33 points came off fumbles. Losing four fumbles on scrimmage plays has happened 33 times in 14,580 team-games since 1999, and those teams went 5-28.

Why it matters.

Ja'Marr Chase finished with 12 yards. The Bengals won anyway, and Mike Gesicki led them with 78.

Anomaly

Chase saw 4 targets and caught 2 for 12 yards. In 79 regular-season games he has been held to 12 or fewer yards three times, and Cincinnati is 2-1 in those games. Joe Burrow still threw for 254 yards on 25 of 35 by spreading the ball: nine Bengals caught a pass, and Gesicki (5 for 78 and the 2-yard touchdown) and Tee Higgins (3 for 59) carried the load.

Why it matters. Chase is the player every Cincinnati passing game plan runs through, so a 12-yard day usually means the whole offense stalled. This time the targets went to the tight ends and backs: Gesicki, Perine, Brown, Sample, and Hudson combined for 17 catches and 153 yards. The win came from field position and turnovers, not from Chase, which is why the Bengals scored 33 with their best receiver a footnote.

A defense that ranked 29th in 2025 held Tampa Bay to minus 0.185 EPA per play, its second-best game in 18

Comparison

Cincinnati allowed plus 0.130 EPA per play across the 2025 regular season, 29th of 32 teams. Against Tampa Bay the number was minus 0.185 on 51 pass and run plays, with 4 sacks and 4 fumble recoveries. Of the 18 games since the start of 2025, only the Week 13 win at Baltimore was better.

Why it matters. Cincinnati's 2025 problem was a defense that turned average offenses into good ones, so the question for 2026 is whether the unit can win a game on its own. This one did: the Knight Jr. return touchdown alone was worth 7 points, and the offense scored 9 in the entire second half. One game against a Tampa Bay offense that ranked 20th last season is a small sample, and the fumbles inflate the EPA figure, but the 4 sacks involved five different rushers (Murphy, Carter, Jenkins, Allen, Mafe), which is harder to fake.

Cincinnati's offense: plus 0.274 EPA per play before halftime, minus 0.277 after, on exactly 31 plays each

Split

Cincinnati's first 31 pass and run plays produced 183 yards, a 51.6 percent success rate, and a 24-10 halftime lead. The next 31 produced 169 yards but minus 0.277 EPA per play; the interception Josiah Trotter returned 38 yards for a touchdown cost 7.5 expected points by itself. Every second-half Cincinnati point came from Evan McPherson's leg. Tampa Bay went the other way, from minus 0.307 to minus 0.025, and outscored the Bengals 17-9 after the break.

Why it matters. A 14-point halftime lead is where an offense usually shortens the game, and Cincinnati did shorten it, but without scoring a touchdown. Three second-half field goals answered every Tampa Bay score and kept the lead at 10 or more from 14:09 of the fourth quarter until Mayfield's touchdown at 3:25. The scoreboard says the plan worked; the per-play numbers say the second-half offense handed the game to the defense and the kicker.

McPherson from 55 and 58: a two-long-kick game has happened 21 times since 1999, 13 of them since 2023

Milestone

Evan McPherson went 4 for 4, and the 55-yarder in the third quarter and the 58-yarder in the fourth were the first time he made two kicks of 55 or more yards in one game. He is now 9 of 14 from that range in his career. The other kicker on the field, Chase McLaughlin, had a 65 and 58 game against Philadelphia in Week 4 of last season. What used to happen about once every few seasons happened 7 times in 2025 alone.

Evan McPherson, career14964.3%

Why it matters. The 58-yarder came right after the interception return had cut the lead to 27-20 and pushed it back to two scores; the 55-yarder had stretched a 24-10 lead to 27-10. The league context matters as much as the kick: 13 of the 21 two-long-kick games in the whole database have come since 2023, so a 55-yard attempt is now a routine call rather than a desperation one. McPherson's 64 percent from that range matches the 2025 league rate almost exactly.

Tampa Bay put up 27 points at minus 0.185 EPA per play, a mix seen in under 1 percent of team-games since 1999

Anomaly

Baker Mayfield completed 23 of 28 for 216 yards with no touchdown pass, took 4 sacks, and the offense lost 4 fumbles; its 51 pass and run plays averaged minus 0.185 EPA. The 27 points came from a 38-yard interception return, two field goals, and two short touchdown runs, Bucky Irving from 10 yards and Mayfield from 9. Only 136 of 14,566 team-games since 1999 paired 27 or more points with an offense that inefficient. The Buccaneers were on the other side of one a year ago: the Jets did it against them in Week 3 of 2025 and lost 29-27.

Why it matters. Points and efficiency usually move together, so a gap this wide says the scoreboard was built by the defense and by field position rather than by the drives. Seven of the 27 came with the offense on the bench, and Mayfield's 82 percent completion rate hides that his completions averaged under 10 yards while four sacks and four lost fumbles erased whole possessions. For Tampa Bay the encouraging read is the second half, when the same offense ran at minus 0.025 per play and the Buccaneers outscored Cincinnati 17-9; the concern is that it all came against a defense that ranked 29th last season.
