Game recap

Browns @ Buccaneers

2026 Wk 2 · TB 19, CLE 23

Deshaun Watson hit 80 percent of his throws and rallied Cleveland from 10 down in the second half.

Cleveland ran for 44 yards and won. Since 1999 the Browns are 3 and 40 in regular season games when they rush for fewer than 50, and this is the only one of the three wins that came on the road.

Tampa Bay out-rushed Cleveland 137 to 44. Quinshon Judkins carried 12 times for 21 yards, and the Browns' longest gain on the ground by a running back was 9 yards. The other 19 times the Browns ran this poorly in a regular season road game, they lost.

Why it matters. A team that cannot run usually cannot protect a lead or stay ahead of the chains, which is why this profile has produced a loss 93 percent of the time for Cleveland. The three exceptions share one trait: the quarterback carried the day through the air. Watson's version was the most efficient of the three, with no interceptions and an 80 percent completion rate, so the win did not depend on surviving turnovers the way the 2023 game did.

Deshaun Watson completed 80 percent of his passes with 2 touchdowns and no interceptions. In 19 earlier Browns starts he completed 62 percent.

The win was Cleveland's first in a Watson start since Week 2 of 2024 at Jacksonville, ending a run of six straight losses with him under center. After halftime he went 17 of 21 for 183 yards with both touchdowns and was not sacked.

Why it matters. Watson's Cleveland tenure has been defined by negative plays: 75 sacks in 19 starts is almost four per game, and his earlier dropbacks cost the Browns about a fifth of a point each. This game flipped both inputs at once, with two sacks and a clean turnover sheet. It is one game against one defense, so it reads as evidence that the ceiling still exists rather than proof that the baseline has moved.

Cleveland gained 60 yards before halftime and 209 after it. Its second quarter netted minus 1 yard on 8 plays.

The Browns' two first half field goals came on drives that stalled at the Tampa Bay 32 and 16, the second one set up by a Myles Harden interception return to the Tampa Bay 28. They also failed on fourth and 1 from their own 34 late in the second quarter, which handed Tampa Bay a short field and three points.

Why it matters. Both offenses were poor early, so Cleveland trailed by only 3 at the break despite barely moving the ball, and that is what kept the second half surge relevant. The swing from minus 0.462 to plus 0.400 EPA per play is nearly nine tenths of a point on every snap. The second half sample of 29 plays is larger than the first, so the improvement is not a product of one long touchdown alone, though the 55 yard score is a big share of the yardage.

Down 16 to 6 midway through the third quarter, Cleveland scored 17 of the final 20 points, then watched Tampa Bay's last drive die at the Browns' 20 after a holding flag.

The go-ahead drive covered 68 yards in 12 plays and converted all four of its third downs, the last one the 17 yard touchdown to Blake Whiteheart on third and 2. Tampa Bay answered with a 48 yard return of the next kick and reached the Cleveland 13 inside the final minute. A holding call on center Graham Barton moved the ball back to the 23, and three plays later the game was over.

Why it matters. The win probability column shows how live this game was at the end: the model gave Tampa Bay a 58.1 percent chance with the ball at the Cleveland 13, and the holding penalty alone took about five points off that number. Cleveland's comeback was not a one play event. It took a field goal drive, a 55 yard strike and a 12 play march that went 4 for 4 on third down, which is the more repeatable part of the story.

Baker Mayfield is 0 and 2 against the team that drafted him first overall. The two losses came by 2 points and by 4.

Both Cleveland games followed the same script: one touchdown pass, one interception, at least three sacks, and a loss by one score. Against Carolina, another of his former teams, Mayfield is 5 and 1 since joining Tampa Bay.

Why it matters. Two games is a small sample, and the 2022 meeting came with a different roster on both sides. What carries over is the Cleveland pass rush winning the matchup: seven sacks across the two games and a completion rate under 62 percent in each. In this one the interception set up a Browns field goal and the final drive ended with three incompletions in its last four snaps, so the margin traced directly to his side of the ball.

Rookie Denzel Boston has 154 receiving yards and a touchdown in each of his first two games. Only Corey Coleman started faster among Browns rookies since 1999.

Boston, the 39th pick in the 2026 draft, caught the 55 yard touchdown that tied the game at 16 and added 9 and 8 yard catches on the go-ahead drive. The only other Browns rookie since 1999 with a touchdown catch in both Week 1 and Week 2 is Andre Davis in 2002. First round pick K.C. Concepcion caught all 6 of his targets for 28 yards.

Why it matters. Cleveland spent two of its first three 2026 picks on receivers, and the early return is that the second round pick is the one producing downfield. Boston's 22 yards per catch through two games contrasts with Concepcion's short area role, which suggests the offense is already using them as complements rather than duplicates. Two games is thin, and Coleman's similar start in 2016 was followed by only 19 games and 718 yards across two Browns seasons, so this marks a fast opening rather than a projection.

Tampa Bay out-gained Cleveland 313 to 269 and kicked four field goals. Its 13 plays inside the Browns' 20 produced 32 yards and one touchdown.

Chase McLaughlin made all four of his kicks, from 59, 45, 31 and 31 yards. The two 31 yarders are the cost: both came after Tampa Bay had first downs at the Cleveland 22 and the Cleveland 21, and the second left the Buccaneers ahead by 3 instead of 7 before the Browns' winning drive. Bucky Irving ran 17 times for 89 yards but caught 4 passes for 1 yard.

Why it matters. Tampa Bay moved the ball better between the 20s than Cleveland did, which is why the yardage and the scoreboard disagree. Last season the Buccaneers scored a touchdown on nearly one of every five snaps inside the 20, with EPA per play there that ranked 18th of 32 teams, and here they managed one in 13. Thirteen plays is a small sample, so the rate itself will bounce back. The part worth tracking is that the same area also produced negative EPA, minus 0.177 per play on 9 snaps, in the Week 1 loss at Cincinnati.
