Game recap

Texans @ Colts

2026 Wk 3 · IND 19, HOU 17

The Colts led for 47 minutes, lost the lead with 1:48 left, and won it back on a 53-yard kick.

Indianapolis gave the ball away three times, took it away zero times, and won. Teams at minus three in turnovers have won 10.1% of the time since 1999.

Two of the three giveaways were strip sacks of Daniel Jones, and the third was an interception at the Houston 1 that erased a drive already inside the 30. Houston turned those three takeaways into 7 points. Since 1999, a team that finishes a regular season game three turnovers worse than its opponent has won 89 of 878 times. Indianapolis is now one of the 89.

Why it matters. Turnover margin is the single strongest in-game predictor of who wins, which is why a minus three team wins about one game in ten. The Colts survived it because Houston's offense converted the short fields into only 7 points and because the defense forced five punts and held Houston to 4 of 11 on third down. That is a fragile way to win. Repeat the giveaways against an offense that cashes them in and the same game ends as a two score loss.

Shrader's 53-yarder with 21 seconds left is the fifth time since 1999 a Colts kicker took the lead from 50-plus in the final half minute.

Across the whole league since 1999 there are 81 made field goals of 50 or more yards in the final 30 seconds that turned a tie or a one or two point deficit into a lead. Five belong to the Colts, and three of those are Adam Vinatieri's. Shrader also hit a 58-yarder before halftime, tying his own week 1 kick as the second longest in the franchise's record since 1999. He finished 4 for 4.

Why it matters. A 53-yard attempt with the game on the line is a coin flip for most of the league, and the Colts' entire day rested on it after Houston had just taken its first lead. Shrader's 58 and 53 in the same game mean the offense only needed to reach the opponent's 40 on the final drive, which is exactly where it stalled. Kicking range this deep changes what a two minute drill has to accomplish.

The Colts led for 47 minutes and 42 seconds. Houston's only lead of the day lasted 87 seconds.

Indianapolis took the lead at 4:32 of the first quarter and did not give it back until Houston's point after with 1:48 to play. Houston's go-ahead drive began at its own 46 after Anderson's second sack fumble of the day. The Colts answered with one 20-yard completion to Treadwell and three plays that gained 9 yards combined, which was enough only because Shrader's range starts near midfield.

Why it matters. This was a game Indianapolis controlled on the scoreboard for three and a half quarters and nearly lost in the final two minutes, which is the profile of a team whose offense stalls rather than one that got outplayed. The winning drive produced 29 net yards. The lesson is about how far out the offense can afford to stop, not about a clutch two minute march.

Houston's offense went from minus 0.295 EPA per play before halftime to plus 0.119 after it. Indianapolis went the other way.

Houston gained 67 yards on 26 first half snaps and 156 on 25 second half snaps, a swing of 0.41 EPA per play across the break. Indianapolis produced its 13 first half points on a near neutral 37 plays, then fell to minus 0.235 in the second half as two more sacks, the interception, and the second strip sack arrived. Neither offense finished the day above zero.

Why it matters. Two offenses trading efficiency across halftime usually points to adjustments and pass rush fatigue rather than talent, and here the swing decided the shape of the fourth quarter. Houston's second half was good enough to score 10 and take the lead. What it was not good enough to do was start earlier: a first half at minus 0.295 per play is why 17 points was the ceiling.

Stroud averaged 12.4 air yards per throw, deeper than any qualifying passer's full 2025 season average.

Stroud's 2025 average was 8.1 air yards per attempt, and his first two games of 2026 sat at 8.5 and 9.0. Against the Colts he pushed that to 12.4, more than 4 yards deeper than his own baseline and above Matthew Stafford's league-leading 9.3 from last season. Jones threw nine passes of 15 or more air yards too, on nine more attempts, and landed at 7.8.

Why it matters. Depth of target is a choice, and Houston chose to attack downfield against a defense that ranked 16th in EPA allowed last season. It produced the game's longest completion, 28 yards to Xavier Hutchinson, and a 4 for 9 line on deep throws, but also a 16 of 27 completion rate and 167 passing yards. The gap between Stroud and Jones is a gap in play design, not arm talent: Indianapolis lived on short throws to Tyler Warren and Josh Downs and moved the ball more, then gave it away.

Houston's eighth 0-3 start in 25 seasons, and the second in a row. The last one ended 12-5.

The Texans have existed for 25 seasons and have now opened 0-3 in eight of them. Two of the seven completed 0-3 seasons finished with a winning record, 2018 at 11-5 and last year at 12-5. Two of this year's three losses have come by 5 points or fewer, and this one arrived after Houston led with under two minutes to play.

Why it matters. An 0-3 start is usually a season sentence, but Houston's own history is the counterexample: the 2025 team did exactly this and won 12. The difference between that group and the 2005 or 2022 versions was a defense that ranked first in the league in EPA allowed, and that defense forced three turnovers here. The offense that scored 17 on three short fields is the part that has to change.
