Lamb was targeted 21 times and finished with 17 catches for 189 yards. Only Jason Witten's 18 in 2012 tops it for a Cowboy in this span, and Lamb's previous best was 13. Five of the catches came on the final 74 yard drive, including the winning touchdown with 43 seconds left.

Why it matters. A 17 catch game means the offense ran through one player on almost every key down, and Houston never found an answer. Dak Prescott completed 32 passes, so Lamb caught more than half of them. That level of concentration carries risk, but here it held up on the drive that decided the game.

Dallas did not lead until 11:20 remained. The lead changed hands three times after that.

Houston led 16-6 at halftime and 23-13 midway through the third quarter. Javonte Williams scored three short rushing touchdowns, and the third gave Dallas its first lead. Woody Marks put Houston back in front with 2:26 left, and Dallas answered with 43 seconds left.

Why it matters. Dallas trailed for nearly 44 straight minutes of game clock, from Houston's first touchdown to Williams' third, and still won. Houston's last answer came quickly, but it left Dallas 2:23 to go 74 yards. The Cowboys used that time on a 74 yard drive, and Houston's last possession ended near midfield.

Brandon Aubrey tried two field goals of 60 yards or more in one half. Houston kicked a field goal after each one failed.

Aubrey made field goals of 39 and 50 yards earlier in the game. The blocked 62 yard try gave Houston the ball at the Dallas 48, and the missed 65 yard try gave it the ball at the Dallas 45. Both drives ended in Houston field goals, which made the halftime score 16-6.

Why it matters. A miss from 60 or more yards hands the opponent field position near midfield, which is the hidden cost of the attempt. Houston turned both chances into points before halftime, a 6 point swing in a game decided by 4. The Cowboys' range with Aubrey is an asset, but this half showed the price when the kicks fail.

Dallas scored 6 points in the first half and 28 in the second, all on touchdowns.

In the first half Dallas reached field goal range four times and came away with 6 points. After halftime it scored on four of its drives, all touchdowns. Houston was more efficient by EPA per play in the first half and Dallas was in the second, while Houston ran only 24 plays after the break against Dallas's 39.

Why it matters. The Cowboys' second half jump in success rate, from 35.3 to 51.3 percent, is the change that flipped a 10 point deficit. Houston's offense did not fall off; it simply had fewer snaps. The result rests on Dallas finishing drives, not on Houston failing on defense in a way that showed up per play.

Houston had its most efficient offensive game of 2026 and its fewest plays. Dallas ran 73.

C.J. Stroud threw for 347 yards on 31 attempts, and Houston averaged 7.94 yards per play against 5.47 for Dallas. Neither team turned the ball over. Dallas converted 6 of 14 third downs and its one fourth down; Houston converted 3 of 9 third downs.

Why it matters. Houston's per play numbers were the best of its season, and it still lost because it had the ball far less. Dallas made up the difference with volume: 23 more plays and more third down chances. For a Houston offense that finished below zero EPA per play in two of its first three games, the efficiency is real, but it did not come with enough possessions.

Houston is 0-4 for the first time under DeMeco Ryans, and the fourth time since 2002. Three of the losses were by one score.

Ryans took over in 2023, and his first three Houston teams finished 10-7, 10-7 and 12-5. The 2025 team started 1-3 before that 12-5 finish. This team has lost three games by 5 points or fewer and the fourth by 14.

Why it matters. Close losses are the most variable kind of result, and Houston has three of them in four games. That context separates this start from a team that is being outplayed every week. It also shows how little separates this start from the 1-3 opening the 2025 team recovered from.
