Game recap

Lions @ Panthers

2026 Wk 4 · CAR 32, DET 26

Tetairoa McMillan caught 14 passes for 192 yards as Detroit lost a seventh straight trip to Carolina.

Tetairoa McMillan caught 14 passes for 192 yards. Only Steve Smith has out-gained him in a Panthers game since 1999.

McMillan drew 16 targets and caught 14, and two of them were touchdowns of 32 and 10 yards. His 192 yards rank second on the Panthers list behind Steve Smith's 201 in 2005, and his 14 catches tie for second behind Christian McCaffrey's 15. Bryce Young finished 29 of 41 for 329 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Why it matters. Carolina's offense ran through one receiver to an unusual degree: McMillan accounted for 192 of Young's 329 passing yards, or more than half. The Panthers' own record book shows how rare that volume is, because every other entry on the yardage list caught 11 balls or fewer. Detroit had no answer for him on third down either, including an 18 yard catch on third and 14 late in the fourth quarter.

Jared Goff threw for 412 yards with no interceptions and lost. Detroit is 5-10 since 1999 when its quarterback reaches 400.

Goff went 32 of 52 for 412 yards and one touchdown, and neither team turned the ball over. It is the 15th 400 yard game by a Detroit passer since 1999, and the 10th loss. Goff himself is now 1-2 in his three 400 yard games with the Lions.

Why it matters. A 400 yard day usually signals a team that is chasing the game rather than controlling it, and Detroit fits that pattern: 53 pass plays against 15 runs, while trailing for 39:46 of game clock. Goff's yards came without a giveaway, so the loss traces to how drives ended rather than to mistakes. Detroit kicked four field goals, which caps the value of all that yardage.

Both teams reached the red zone four times. Carolina scored three touchdowns there, Detroit two.

Three of Jake Bates' four field goals came from 41 yards or longer, on drives that stalled at the Carolina 36, 25 and 23. Inside the 20, Detroit ran 14 plays to Carolina's 8 and produced 0.066 EPA per play to Carolina's 0.305. Down 13 in the fourth, Detroit threw three straight incompletions from the Carolina 15 and turned it over on downs.

Why it matters. Detroit actually ran more red zone plays than Carolina, so the gap is efficiency rather than access. Each of the four field goals came up four points short of a touchdown and extra point, before counting the fourth down stop. Carolina missed two extra points and still won by six, which shows how much the short field mattered.

Detroit led for 10:13 and tied it twice, but never led after the first quarter.

Detroit answered each of Carolina's first three scores and twice drew level in the second quarter, at 13 and 16. It never went back in front. After LaPorta's touchdown cut it to six, Carolina punted to the Detroit 13 with 2:12 left, and Goff's fourth and 13 completion to Isaac TeSlaa gained 12 yards, one short of a first down.

Why it matters. The game was close on the scoreboard for three quarters, yet Carolina held the lead for roughly two thirds of the clock. Each Detroit equalizer was followed by a Carolina score within one possession, so the Lions spent the second half playing from behind. That is why Detroit ran 53 pass plays against 15 runs.

Detroit has allowed 127 points in four games, its most through four since 2022.

Detroit came in allowing 0.149 EPA per play, fourth highest in the league over the first three weeks, and Carolina produced 0.289 on 70 plays. Carolina's offense had managed minus 0.127 a week earlier at Cleveland. The Lions have now allowed 30 or more in three of four games, and their 127 points allowed tie the 2020 team for fifth most through four games since 1999.

Why it matters. Detroit's offense has scored 119 points, fifth most for the franchise through four games since 1999, so the 2-2 start is a defensive story. The Panthers' 0.289 EPA per play was their best of the season by a wide margin, against a defense that had already given up 0.435 per play at Buffalo. The pattern points at a unit that is leaking efficiency to varied opponents, not one bad matchup.

Carolina has beaten Detroit seven straight times at home. The Lions last won there in 1999.

Detroit won 24-9 in Charlotte in Week 7 of 1999 and has lost all seven visits since. Sunday's six point margin ties the 20-14 game in 2003 as the closest of the streak. In Detroit, the series has gone the other way: the Lions won three of the five meetings at home over the same span.

Why it matters. The streak runs from 2002 to 2026, long enough to cover very different Lions teams, so it is not one team's peak beating another's trough. Detroit arrived having scored 31 in each of its first three games and still fell short. The neutral read is a quirk of scheduling and timing, but it is now a 27 year quirk.
