Game recap

Chiefs @ Raiders

2026 Wk 4 · LV 27, KC 30

Kenneth Walker scored twice in 15 seconds, and a last second interception sealed the Chiefs' escape.

Kansas City scored two offensive touchdowns 15 seconds of game clock apart. Six teams have done that in a fourth quarter since 1999.

Kenneth Walker III ran in from 2 yards at 3:25 to put Kansas City ahead 23-19, and the two point try failed. On the next kickoff Jack Cochrane recovered a Dareke Young fumble at the Raiders 22, and Walker ran 22 yards for a second touchdown at 3:10. In all six cases the scoring team got the ball straight back: five times on a turnover on the kickoff or the next snap, and once, for Detroit, on an onside kick. Two of the six teams still lost.

Why it matters. A game that was 19-17 to the Raiders with under four minutes left became a 30-19 Chiefs lead before the Raiders ran a single offensive play. The kickoff fumble is the mechanism: it gave Kansas City a short field that needed one carry. Only one other team on this list did it later in a game, and Detroit lost that one.

Kansas City's win probability was 33 percent before a 3rd and 5 with 3:35 left. Before the extra point that made it 30-19, it was 97 percent.

The Raiders were not finished. Kirk Cousins hit Brock Bowers for a 20 yard touchdown at 1:54 and found Cody White for two points to make it 30-27. Kansas City recovered the onside kick, and Matt Araiza's punt was downed at the Raiders 1 by Xavier Nwankpa. The Raiders drove from their own 1 to the Kansas City 49 before Nwankpa intercepted a pass meant for Michael Mayer with 10 seconds left.

Why it matters. The swing started on a 3rd and 5 from the Kansas City 40, the one snap where a stop would have handed the Raiders the ball with a lead. Thornton was injured on that 55 yard catch, so the comeback ran through the ground game after it. Nwankpa appears at both ends of the closing sequence: he shared the tackle on the fumbled kickoff and the interception that ended the game.

Kenneth Walker III has two 170 yard rushing games in his first four as a Chief. Only three other Chiefs since 1999 had two in a whole season.

Walker ran 22 times for 177 yards and 2 touchdowns, the most rushing yards in any regular season game of his career. Two of his three best games have now come in September and October of 2026. Between his 170 yard games he had 117 yards against Indianapolis and 70 against Miami.

Why it matters. Kansas City has spent most of the Mahomes era as a pass first offense, and no Chief had two 170 yard games in one season from 2013 through 2025. Walker reached that mark in four weeks, so this is a real change in how the offense is built rather than one big afternoon. Kansas City's 25 carries in this game averaged plus 0.233 EPA, better than its 32 passing plays at plus 0.084.

Nobody scored in the third quarter. The fourth produced 34 of the game's 57 points.

The Raiders led 13-10 after three quarters on an Ian Thomas touchdown and two Matt Gay field goals. Gay added two more in the fourth, from 44 and 48 yards, to finish 4 for 4. Kansas City ran only 13 fourth quarter plays and scored 20 points, because a 55 yard catch and a fumbled kickoff did most of the work.

Why it matters. Kansas City's fourth quarter success rate fell to 30.8 percent from 47.7 percent over the first three quarters, yet its EPA per play more than quadrupled. That combination means the late points came from a handful of explosive plays and a turnover rather than sustained drives. The Raiders were the steadier offense in the fourth on success rate and still lost the quarter by 6.

The Raiders ran 75 plays to Kansas City's 57, and their run game was worse than its already weak first three weeks.

Kirk Cousins went 31 of 52 for 365 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception, and his passing game matched its Weeks 1 to 3 rate exactly at plus 0.178 per play. The Raiders run game, minus 0.197 per play coming in, fell to minus 0.237; Ashton Jeanty had 58 yards on 15 carries. Kansas City flipped its usual shape: its passing fell from plus 0.236 to plus 0.084 while its running rose from plus 0.125 to plus 0.233.

Why it matters. The Raiders' volume came almost entirely through the air, and a run game that weak leaves an offense needing long drives through the air, which is how the final drive started from its own 1. Kansas City won with its lower volume because its run game produced nearly double its usual value per carry. Three games is a small baseline, so the size of each shift deserves caution, but the direction is clear for both teams.

Andy Reid's Chiefs are now 22-5 against the Raiders, and 11-3 at the Raiders' home stadium.

This 30-27 result was the third road meeting under Reid decided by 3 points or fewer. The most recent of the five losses came in Week 18 of 2025 at the Raiders' stadium, 14-12, and Kansas City answered it here by the same narrow kind of margin.

Why it matters. A 22-5 record means the Raiders have beaten Reid's Chiefs about once every five meetings, and the road split is nearly as strong as the home split. The close games are where the Raiders have broken through: two of the five losses came by 1 or 2 points. This one fit the pattern of a tight game in the Raiders' building, and Kansas City came out on the right side of it.
