Lions @ Cardinals
2026 Wk 5 · ARI 21, DET 45
Detroit trailed 7-0, then scored 31 straight points with three touchdowns on fourth down.
Three of Detroit's six touchdowns came on fourth down. Only two other teams have done that in a game since 1999.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 13:37 | 3 | Goff pass to Sam LaPorta, 12 yards | First down |

| 3 | 1:07 | 1 | Jared Goff run, 1 yard | Touchdown |
Detroit went 4 for 4 on fourth down, and three of the four conversions ended in the end zone. The only other teams in the database to score three offensive touchdowns on fourth down in one game are the 2017 Steelers in a playoff game and the 2023 Chargers, who did it against Detroit.
Why it matters. Fourth down touchdowns are a coaching decision before they are a play, and Dan Campbell made that decision three times inside scoring range instead of taking points. Each one passed up a field goal try inside the Arizona 40 and came back with seven points instead. The list is three games long across 28 seasons, which makes this a genuine outlier rather than a quirk of a big score.
Arizona led 7 to 0. Detroit then scored 31 straight points and recovered all three of its own fumbles along the way.

Detroit fumbles in this game

| 3 | 11:10 | St. Brown catch, stripped by Baron Browning | DET, at ARI 46 |
All three Detroit fumbles came during the 31 point run, and Detroit recovered every one in Arizona territory. The first kept a drive alive at the Arizona 44, though that drive ended in a punt. The second set up a drive from the Arizona 47 that ended with LaPorta's 38 yard score on fourth and 1. The third came two plays before Williams' 39 yard touchdown made it 31 to 7. Arizona's only takeaway was an interception at the Detroit 17 on the last play of the first half.
Why it matters. Fumble recoveries are close to a coin flip over a season, so keeping all three is a large piece of luck inside a lopsided result. Any one of them going the other way would have handed Arizona the ball in Detroit territory while the game was still close. None of that takes away the efficiency on the other snaps, but the 31 point run was not built on execution alone.
Detroit scored 24 first half points while succeeding on 38.9 percent of its plays. After halftime that rate jumped to 58.6 percent.

| ARI | 1st | 34 | -0.162 | 35.3% |
| ARI | 2nd | 36 | 0.196 | 52.8% |
Detroit's 24 point second quarter came from an offense that succeeded on fewer than four in ten snaps. One of its three first half touchdown drives began at the Arizona 47 after Detroit recovered a punt return fumble, and two of the three touchdowns came on fourth down. After halftime the Lions were simply efficient: 0.561 EPA per play on 29 snaps. Arizona also improved after the break, from minus 0.162 to plus 0.196, but by then it trailed 24 to 7.
Why it matters. The halves tell two different stories about the same score. The first half lead rested on fourth down calls and a recovered punt return fumble, which do not repeat reliably from week to week. The second half number is the more durable signal, because 58.6 percent success over 29 plays reflects plays working, not breaks going Detroit's way.
Detroit had allowed 30 or more in three of its first four games. Arizona scored 21, the fewest against the Lions this season.

| 5 | ARI | 45 | 21 | 0.326 | 0.022 | 5 |
This was Detroit's best offensive game of the season by EPA per play and its fewest points allowed. The defense sacked Jacoby Brissett five times on 52 dropbacks and allowed 0.022 EPA per play, second only to the Week 1 game against New Orleans. Seven of Arizona's 21 points came on a touchdown with 2:17 left and Detroit ahead 45 to 14. Detroit allowed 24.3 points a game across the 2025 regular season.
Why it matters. Detroit's offense was never the problem in a 2 and 2 start; it had scored 26 or more every week. What changed here was the defense holding an opponent under its 2025 average for only the second time in five games. Arizona's late touchdown came with the game decided, so the 21 points slightly overstate how much the Cardinals moved the ball while it mattered.
Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 151 yards after totaling 197 across the previous three weeks.

Gibbs averaged 17 carries and 65.7 rushing yards over Weeks 2 to 4, then took 25 carries for 151 yards and two touchdowns. His 207 scrimmage yards are the third highest regular season total of his career, and this was his fourth regular season game of 150 or more rushing yards. Two of those four have come in the first five weeks of 2026.
Why it matters. Carries tracked yards closely here: Gibbs' two biggest rushing days this season are also his two highest carry counts, 29 and 25. That points to game script and play calling rather than a change in how well he ran, since a Detroit lead lets the offense lean on him. The receiving line held steady between 30 and 65 yards every week, so the swing is almost entirely on the ground.
Detroit's most points and widest winning margin against Arizona since 1999, and its fifth straight trip to Arizona without a loss.

Detroit's highest scoring road games since 1999

Detroit's previous high in the series was 42 points in 2003, and its previous largest win was 18, reached in 2003 and 2021. In Arizona, the Lions lost eight straight visits from 1999 through 2014 and have gone 4 and 0 with a tie since. The 45 points also tie the 2011 game in Denver for Detroit's second highest road total in the database, behind 47 at Dallas in 2024.
Why it matters. For most of this series Arizona was the hard trip for Detroit, with every visit from 1999 through 2014 ending in a loss. The last five trips have flipped that completely, and this one was Detroit's most lopsided win of the 20 meetings. It is a franchise level marker more than a matchup one, since both rosters have turned over many times across that span.
