Commanders @ 49ers

Week 6 · 2026

Jayden Daniels meets a 49ers defense allowing big plays at the lowest rate since 1999.

No defense since 1999 has allowed big plays at a lower rate through five games

Storyline

San Francisco is 5 and 0, and its defense has given opponents almost nothing big. Opponents have gained 20 or more yards on a pass or 10 or more on a run on 13 of 317 snaps, 4.1 percent, the lowest rate through five games of any defense since 1999, and Arizona ran 80 plays against it in Week 3 without one. Washington arrives 1, 3 and 1 after a 27 to 27 overtime tie with the Giants in which it never trailed and led 27 to 13 in the fourth quarter, built on nine explosive plays in 60 snaps, two of them Jayden Daniels scrambles of 38 and 26 yards for touchdowns. Monday night asks whether the Commanders can find those plays against a defense that has allowed four or fewer in every game, or whether they have to drive the long way while Brock Purdy works against them at the other end.

Week 5 set each team beside its 2025 numbers in a different way. San Francisco won 32 to 29 at Seattle with a defense that allowed minus 0.425 EPA per play, first of the 30 teams that played, after plus 0.070 and 24th across 2025. Washington's offense posted plus 0.111 per play against the Giants, 10th of the week, after plus 0.006 and 18th in 2025. Each is one game, set beside a full season.

Why it matters. San Francisco's defense was 24th in EPA allowed in 2025 but already fifth in explosive rate, so the 2026 number sits on a real base rather than on five lucky weeks. Washington's best moments have come in chunks: its Week 5 offense was fifth of the week in explosive rate, and two of its three touchdowns were long Daniels scrambles. If those chunks do not come, Washington needs long drives against a team that leads the league in passing efficiency, which is where every collision below points.

Purdy leads the league in touchdown passes. Washington's pass defense is 24th

What to watch

The other end of the field is where Washington's long way gets longer. Brock Purdy has 13 touchdown passes, the most in the league, with two interceptions on 142 attempts, and San Francisco's dropbacks have produced plus 0.394 EPA each, first of 32, after plus 0.159 and seventh in 2025. He went unsacked for four games: all three sacks the 49ers have allowed came at Seattle in Week 5, when their passing game fell to minus 0.061 per dropback. Washington's pass defense allows plus 0.093 per dropback, 24th, after 30th in 2025, and its nine sacks on 199 dropbacks, 4.5 percent, rank 27th. If Purdy reaches halftime without being sacked, the first four weeks are back; if the Commanders get him down in the first half, they have found what Seattle found.

Why it matters. San Francisco's passing game is the best in the league by EPA per dropback and it was top 10 in 2025 as well, while Washington's pass defense was 30th in 2025 and is 24th now. The one dent in the 49ers' passing numbers came the only time a defense got to Purdy, so Washington's pass rush, 27th by rate, is the swing unit. If it cannot get home, the storyline's question gets harder: Washington would need its own big plays just to keep pace.

Washington's quarterbacks run for the most yards. The 49ers allow almost none

What to watch

The Commanders' surest source of big plays is their quarterback's legs. Washington's quarterbacks have run 28 times for 271 yards, 54.2 a game, first of 32, after first in 2025 at 37.8, and Daniels has 203 yards on 21 carries in his three games, 103 of them with two touchdowns against the Giants. San Francisco has allowed 34 yards on 11 quarterback carries, 6.8 a game, second fewest behind Atlanta, after fourth in 2025 at 13.8. Washington's defense sits at the other end, 23rd at 22.8 a game allowed. If Daniels has a scramble of 10 yards or more in the first half, the 49ers' rush lanes have opened and Washington has a way to the big play; if his first-half runs are short or his dropbacks end in throwaways, the 49ers have taken away the one chunk play Washington could count on.

Why it matters. Strength meets strength across two seasons: Washington led the league in quarterback rushing in 2025 and leads again, and San Francisco was a top five defense against it in 2025 and is second now. Since the 49ers allow so few explosive plays of any kind, a Daniels scramble is Washington's most proven way to get one, which ties this collision straight to the storyline's question.

San Francisco converts over half its third downs. Washington allows 45 percent

What to watch

If Washington cannot hit the big play, it has to get the 49ers off the field, and third down has been where its defense gives way. San Francisco converts 51.9 percent of its third downs, second of 32, after leading the league at 50.7 percent in 2025. Washington's defense allows 45.5 percent, 24th, after 23rd in 2025, and the Giants converted 8 of 17 against it in Week 5. The 49ers were 4 of 12 at Seattle, their lowest rate of the season, one game against four. At the other end Washington converts 31.9 percent, 29th, against a San Francisco defense that allows 40.8 percent, 16th. If the 49ers convert their first two third downs, Washington's offense starts the night watching; if Washington forces two punts in the first quarter, it has the possessions it needs to find a big play.

Why it matters. San Francisco's third down offense has been at or near the top for two seasons, and Washington's third down defense has been in the bottom third for both, so this is the steadiest edge in the game. Every extra 49ers conversion is a possession Washington does not get, and a team chasing big plays against the defense that allows the fewest needs as many possessions as it can find.
