Home field still counts, a little less

Holds upThe record backs this up, season after season.

Playing at home still helps. Crowd noise, travel, and familiar surroundings are real edges. But that edge is smaller than it used to be, probably because road teams travel better and officiating and scheduling have evened things out.

Each bar is one season. Green bars point the same way as the overall result, pink bars point against it. Recent seasons count for more in the typical size, which is measured on the scale of the check behind this rule, so compare it across the seasons here rather than across different rules.

How we know

Home teams benefit from crowd noise disrupting opposing offensive communication, no short-week travel fatigue, and a familiar field and locker room. Some of these edges have eroded over time as team travel logistics, sports science, and even crowd noise mitigation (visiting teams practicing with crowd noise piped in) have improved league-wide.

We check this the same way every time: run the claim against every season from 1999 to 2025 in the play-by-play record, one season at a time, and grade it on how often the seasons agree. This one came back the same way in 26 of 27 seasons.

The claim, stated precisely

Home teams win more than 50% of games, but the size of that home-field advantage has shrunk over the last decade compared to earlier eras.
