Marcedes Lewis

TE

Lewis redefined what a long TE career looks like: after age 33, most veteran TEs retire within 2 seasons; Lewis played 8 more as a near-non-target, proving blocking value alone can sustain an NFL career.

The only TE in NFL history to play 20 seasons — and the last 8 on almost no targets.

Why it matters. Lewis redefined what a long TE career looks like: after age 33, most veteran TEs retire within 2 seasons; Lewis played 8 more as a near-non-target, proving blocking value alone can sustain an NFL career.

2010: #1 TE in TDs league-wide. 2011: 85 targets, zero touchdowns.

Why it matters. The 2010–2011 swing illustrates how dependent Lewis's value was on red-zone scripting: the targets stayed the same but JAX stopped feeding him inside the 10, turning a Pro Bowler into a pure blocker overnight.

From 19% target share at JAX peak to 0.8% at CHI in 2024 — an 18-year fade.

Why it matters. Target-share data reveals what raw yardage splits hide: the blocking-TE transition wasn’t one sudden moment but a decade-long fade that teams kept paying premium money for, year after year.

He is the ONLY tight end in NFL history to play 20 seasons — 3 more than Witten and Gates.

Why it matters. Witten and Gonzalez were primary receivers well into their 30s; Lewis survived as a pure blocker, showing that blocking-TE longevity has a higher ceiling than receiver-TE longevity because the physical demands are different.

In 2010 he tied Gronk and Gates for the TE TD lead. Then never finished top 15 in TDs again.

Why it matters. Context makes 2010 stranger: Lewis ran at the same tier as two future Hall of Famers for exactly one season, then returned permanently to mid-to-lower-tier receiving status while remaining employed for a decade as a blocker.

He was still on an NFL roster at age 41 — one of only two TEs in 25 years to play at 40+.

Why it matters. Lewis's age-40+ appearances put him in a two-player club across 25 years of NFL history, demonstrating that blocking value can extend a tight end's career several years beyond what receiving skills alone would sustain.
