Joe Flacco
QB · CIN Bengals
Quarterback production is context-soaked, and Flacco is the cleanest 2025 case study: identical player, two offenses, wildly different output. Cleveland asked him to survive; Cincinnati handed him Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins and asked him to deal. The six-start Cincinnati stretch is why he entered 2026 with a roster spot instead of a retirement announcement.
The 2025 resurrection
He opened 2025 losing to the Bengals by a point. Six weeks later he was their starting quarterback.
TrendFlacco's 2025, in two acts (regular season)
| Act | Starts | Comp-Att | Yards | TD | INT |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cleveland, weeks 1-4 | 4 | 93-160 | 815 | 2 | 6 |
| Cincinnati, weeks 6-12 | 6 | 154-250 | 1,636 | 13 | 4 |
Week 1: Flacco's Browns lose 16-17 to Cincinnati. Then Joe Burrow's foot gives out, Jake Browning stalls, and by week 6 the Bengals have traded for the 40-year-old who just played against them. In Cleveland he threw 2 touchdowns in a month. In stripes he threw 13 in six starts, with his interception rate more than halved. Same season, same arm, completely different story.
Why it matters.
Same roster, 15 more points a game: what the trade did to Cincinnati's scoreboard.
ComparisonCincinnati points per game by starter, 2025 weeks 3-18
| Starter | Starts | CIN points per game | Record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jake Browning (wks 3-5) | 3 | 12.3 | 0-3 |
| Joe Flacco (wks 6-12) | 6 | 27.2 | 1-5 |
| Joe Burrow (wks 13-18) | 6 | 27.7 | 3-3 |
With Browning, the Bengals scored 12.3 points a game and lost every week. Flacco walked in off a trade and the same offense jumped to 27.2, within half a point of what it managed when Burrow himself returned. A 40-year-old acquired midseason replicated the franchise quarterback's scoring output almost exactly.
Why it matters. The 15-point jump is the whole argument for the trade. It also reframes what Cincinnati's 2025 collapse actually was: the offense was fixable with a functional veteran in a week, which points the blame at the position's depth chart in September, not at the skill talent. For 2026 it means the Bengals' scoring floor with any competent quarterback is high.
27.2 points a game in his starts. A 1-5 record anyway.

| Week | Opponent | CIN | Opp |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | GB | 18 | 27 |
| 7 | PIT | 33 | 31 |
| 8 | NYJ | 38 | 39 |
| 9 | CHI | 42 | 47 |
| 11 | PIT | 12 | 34 |
| 12 | NE | 20 | 26 |
Cincinnati scored 27.2 points a game with Flacco starting and went 1-5, because the defense handed back 34.0 a game. They scored 38 and lost. They scored 42 and lost. Flacco's stretch produced two of the highest-scoring losing efforts of Cincinnati's season, and the one win required 33.
Why it matters. This is the cleanest separation of offense from outcome in the 2025 season. Flacco did the quarterback's share of winning; the games were lost on the other side of the ball. It matters going forward because scoring is the part of a team that most reliably persists, while a defense bleeding explosive plays is the part history says keeps bleeding until the roster changes.
Eighteen seasons of receipts
48,176 passing yards: tenth-most of any quarterback since 1999.
MilestoneCareer regular-season passing yards, 1999-2025
| Rank | Player | Yards | TD |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tom Brady | 89,216 | 649 |
| 2 | Drew Brees | 80,428 | 571 |
| 3 | Peyton Manning | 68,201 | 513 |

| 9 | Eli Manning | 57,023 | 366 |
| 10 | Joe Flacco | 48,176 | 272 |
| 11 | Russell Wilson | 46,966 | 353 |
Eighteen seasons, six franchises, and 48,176 regular-season yards: more than Russell Wilson, more than Carson Palmer, more than anybody in a quarter century except nine names that read like a wing of Canton. He got there without ever leading the league in passing once.
Why it matters. The top of this list is all volume-era legends, and Flacco sits among them through pure accumulation: durability, starting jobs earned in four different decades of his life, and a franchise that never benched him in his prime. Longevity at quarterback is itself a skill signal, because teams stop giving starts to arms that can't help them.
January 2013: eleven touchdowns, zero interceptions, four wins, one ring.
MilestoneFlacco's 2012 postseason, game by game
| Round | Opponent | Yards | TD | INT |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wild Card | IND | 282 | 2 | 0 |
| Divisional | DEN | 331 | 3 | 0 |
| Championship | NE | 240 | 3 | 0 |
| Super Bowl | SF | 287 | 3 | 0 |
Four playoff games, 11 touchdowns, zero interceptions, wins over Peyton Manning's Broncos and Tom Brady's Patriots back to back on the road, then a Super Bowl title against San Francisco. It remains one of the cleanest postseason runs any quarterback has put together in the data.
Why it matters. One month of football defined his career and his contract, and the numbers hold up to the legend: zero interceptions across four elimination games is close to the theoretical ceiling of playoff quarterbacking. It is also the reason every team since has been willing to hand him a huddle at 38, 39, 40: institutional memory of what the ceiling looks like.
The 15-touchdown season at age 40 has happened six times in 27 years. He owns the newest one.
RareQBs with a 15+ TD season at age 40 or older, 1999-2025
| Player | Best such season | TD that year |
|---|---|---|
| Brett Favre | 2009 (age 40) | 33 |
| Tom Brady | 2021 (age 44) | 43 |
| Drew Brees | 2019 (age 40) | 27 |
| Aaron Rodgers | 2024 (age 41) | 28 |
| Vinny Testaverde | 2004 (age 41) | 17 |
| Joe Flacco | 2025 (age 40) | 15 |
Since 1999, only six quarterbacks have thrown 15 or more touchdowns in a season at age 40 or older: Favre, Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Testaverde, and now Flacco. Every other name on the list is a first-ballot argument. Flacco got there as a midseason trade acquisition splitting the year across two teams.
Why it matters. Age-40 production is the rarest kind of quarterback season because the job usually removes you before biology does: teams stop offering starts long before arms fully die. That the 2025 edition came from a player who began the year as Cleveland's stopgap makes it the least probable entry on the list.
What age 41 looks like
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT: history has allowed five quarterbacks a real age-41 season since 1999.
QBs with 200+ attempts in an age-41-or-older season, 1999-2025
| Player | Age-41+ seasons with 200+ attempts |
|---|---|
| Tom Brady | 5 (2018-2022) |
| Aaron Rodgers | 2 (2024, 2025) |
| Vinny Testaverde | 1 (2004) |
| Brett Favre | 1 (2010) |
| Drew Brees | 1 (2020) |
Flacco turns 42 in January 2027. Only five quarterbacks in this data have thrown 200 passes in a season at 41 or older, and all five were legends still holding an uncontested starting job. Flacco's 2026 team has Joe Burrow. The call: Flacco finishes 2026 under 250 pass attempts and under 12 touchdown throws. He is a premium insurance policy now, and insurance only pays out when something goes wrong.
Why it matters. This is a workload forecast, not a talent one: his 2025 tape says the arm still works, but the 200-attempt club at 41+ is five names deep in 27 years and every member entered the season as the unquestioned starter. Backup quarterbacks at any age, let alone 41, rarely see 250 attempts unless the starter's season ends. Grade it against his 2026 attempt and touchdown totals.
