Tyreek Hill

WR

Hill's longevity and volume arc as a 5th-round speed receiver is historically unprecedented — six 1,200-yard seasons bridges a decade of dominance no similar archetype has managed.

A 5th-round pick who became the second-most prolific WR of the last decade.

The 165th overall pick in 2016 (5th round, West Alabama) cleared 1,200 yards in six different seasons and set a career-high 1,861 yards in 2023. The 2024 dropoff to 959 yards was the first sub-1,000 line since his rookie year — a real cliff after two All-Pro seasons in Miami.

Why it matters. Hill's longevity and volume arc as a 5th-round speed receiver is historically unprecedented — six 1,200-yard seasons bridges a decade of dominance no similar archetype has managed.

12,575 yards since 2016 — only Davante Adams has more among WRs.

Among all WRs since 2016 (Hill's rookie year), only Davante Adams has more receiving yards. Hill is just 52 yards behind Adams but trails him by 85 receptions — he's getting there at 13.74 yards per catch vs Adams's 12.63.

He also has 41 career 100-yard games since entering the league, one of the most dominant sustained big-game rates in modern NFL history.

Why it matters. The 52-yard gap with Adams — narrowed across a decade of 900+ reception careers — shows Hill's efficiency advantage: more yards per catch with fewer looks.

27 receptions of 50+ yards — 9 more than any other WR since 2016.

Hill has 27 catches of 50+ yards since entering the league in 2016 — 9 more than DK Metcalf (18), the next-closest active WR. That's a 50% edge over a group that includes established deep threats.

The big-play frequency isn't a Mahomes artifact either: Hill maintained it in Miami, where 13 of those 27 catches came with Tua Tagovailoa throwing.

Why it matters. A 50-yard catch requires exceptional separation speed plus a QB who can throw deep — sustaining a 9-catch lead over Metcalf across two franchises proves Hill's breakaway rate is inherent, not system-dependent.

Yards went UP in Miami. Touchdowns fell off a cliff.

Split

Per-game receiving with Mahomes vs Tagovailoa

With Tagovailoa (MIA, 2022–2025)569.26.386.98.5

The conventional wisdom is that Miami unlocked a bigger version of Hill — and the volume numbers back it: more targets, more catches, and 4.9 more yards per game. But the TD rate cratered from 11.5 per 17 games with Mahomes to 8.5 with Tua — a 26% drop.

The Mahomes-era Hill was a red-zone weapon Andy Reid schemed to the end zone. The Tua-era Hill is a YPG monster who churns yards without the same finishing rate. Same player, two job descriptions.

Why it matters. The yardage increase to Miami masks a TD collapse that costs Hill on efficiency metrics and fantasy value — Tua's arm unlocks the deep ball but misses the tight-window red-zone connection Mahomes had.

Other speed WRs from his draft class barely hit 1,000 career yards.

Anomaly

Sub-4.30 burner WRs of the late 2010s — career receiving

Henry Ruggs202029214

The 'small fast WR' archetype almost never lasts. Hill's draft-class peer Will Fuller retired with 3,278 yards. John Ross (the 4.22 combine guy) finished with 963. Henry Ruggs played two seasons. Even Marquise Goodwin — a 10-year vet — didn't crack 3,100 yards.

Hill has surpassed DeSean Jackson's career mark (11,638 yards, 15 seasons) in 10 seasons — the only sub-4.30 burner of his era still operating as a true WR1.

Why it matters. Speed WRs historically flame out fast from injury, coverage adjustments, or scheme limitations — Hill's longevity at elite production makes him a statistical outlier even among the best speed receivers in NFL history.

In 2024, Hill scored 0 TDs in 6 games without Tua — 6 in 11 with him.

Tua missed six games in 2024 with concussion and hip injuries. With Skylar Thompson and Tyler Huntley behind center, Hill was a different receiver: 0 touchdowns, 44 yards per game, and his EPA per target collapsed from +0.28 to +0.07.

The full-season 959-yard line gets blamed on Hill's age (turned 30 mid-season) or scheme, but the splits tell a simpler story — a deep-threat WR is only as good as the QB who can hit him deep.

Why it matters. Hill's EPA/target halves when Tua is absent, illustrating how deep-threat production is a QB-WR co-dependent skill: elite arm talent is the multiplier that converts Hill's separation into actual scoring.
