Taysom Hill

QB

Passing, rushing, and receiving production at this scale never co-occur in one player because every NFL offense forces specialization. Hill's totals show New Orleans designed an actual three-phase usage pattern around him for nearly a decade, not a one-off gadget snap.

He's the rarest QB in modern NFL: 2,476 passing yards, 2,624 rushing yards AND 1,066 receiving yards in his career.

Why it matters. Passing, rushing, and receiving production at this scale never co-occur in one player because every NFL offense forces specialization. Hill's totals show New Orleans designed an actual three-phase usage pattern around him for nearly a decade, not a one-off gadget snap.

From BYU undrafted to Sean Payton's Swiss Army knife: his carries jumped from 40 (2018) to 96 (2022) as his role expanded.

Why it matters. The shape of his usage shows a deliberate organizational call: when Brees was healthy, Hill was a Wildcat hammer; when Brees got hurt in 2020, the staff trusted him with 121 attempts; then they rebuilt him as a TE/RB hybrid. Few careers have this kind of in-roster pivot.

Week 5, 2022 vs SEA: he threw a TD AND ran for 3 TDs in the same game — including a 60-yard rushing TD as a listed TE.

Why it matters. Three rush TDs plus a passing TD in one game is the canonical multi-phase outlier — it only happens when the offense fully unlocks a player as both passer and runner. Hill doing it while listed as TE is the loudest single-game evidence of his hybrid role.

All 9 seasons of his career (2017-2025) have been with New Orleans — he has never been on another NFL roster.

Why it matters. Long single-team tenures are rare for any player and rarer for utility players, who usually bounce around chasing roles. Hill staying in one scheme for nine years is part of why his hybrid usage actually works — it's tied to the building's institutional memory.

He is the only player in the database with 10+ career passing TDs, 30+ rushing TDs, AND 10+ receiving TDs.

Why it matters. Modern NFL roles force players into one or two phases. Clearing 10+ TDs in all three phases requires a player the offense actively designs into the passing pocket, the run game, AND the route tree — which only Hill has been treated as.

50% of his 34 career rushing TDs came from inside the opponent 5-yard line — he is a designed goal-line battering ram.

21+ yards out617.6%

Why it matters. Where a player's TDs come from says more about role than the raw total. Half of Hill's rush TDs are red-zone wedge plays — that means he's not running QB scrambles, he's the designed short-yardage finisher, which is why a 'QB' carries the workload of a goal-line back.
