Drafted 15th overall in 2017 out of Ohio State, Hooker was billed as the next Ed Reed-style center fielder. Two early injuries — torn ACL in rookie year, torn Achilles in 2020 (5 tackles total) — derailed the Colts arc and led to his free-agent move to Dallas in 2021.
Five seasons in Dallas have been about availability over splash: 166 tackles, 14 PDs across his Cowboys tenure. His best season as a Cowboy was 2024 (42 tackles, 5 PDs).

7 career INTs in 9 seasons — but 5 of them came in his first 14 NFL games as a rookie.
AnomalyThe 2017 rookie season was supposed to be the introduction of an All-Pro free safety. Hooker started 7 games before tearing his ACL and had 3 INTs and 4 PDs in that abbreviated window — a near-historic per-game pace.
He never matched that pickrate again. Through the rest of his career, he's averaged less than 0.5 INTs/season — the result of being deployed as more of a deep-third safety than a free-roaming ball-hawk. The 4 PDs/year early in his career has become the more sustainable signature stat.
Career tackle volume tells the injury story: 78 in his first 3 healthy seasons, 166 across 5 Dallas seasons.
SplitTackles by era
| Era | Seasons | Tackles |
|---|---|---|
| Colts healthy (2017-19) | 3 | 73 |
| Colts injured (2020) | 1 | 5 |
| Cowboys (2021-25) | 5 | 166 |
The 2020 Achilles tear is the line that splits his career. Before: 3 partial seasons in Indianapolis totaling 73 tackles. After: 5 mostly-healthy years in Dallas totaling 166 tackles.
The per-season average actually went up after the injury — 14.6 tackles/season in Indy (factoring the rookie ACL and 2020 Achilles) vs. 33.2 tackles/season as a Cowboy. The injuries front-loaded the career; the back half has been the steadier production.
5 PDs and 3 TFL in 2024 — both career-highs at age 28.
MilestoneAt age 28 in his 8th NFL season, Hooker quietly hit career-highs in pass defenses (5) and tackles for loss (3) during the 2024 Cowboys season.
The 2024 line — 42 tackles, 5 PDs, 3 TFL — matched what you'd expect from a quality strong-safety/free-safety hybrid in his prime. 2025 has been a quieter regression year (25 tackles, 1 PD), but the 2024 baseline is the version a contender pays for at the safety position.
Of the four safeties taken in the 2017 first round, Hooker is the only one still on his second contract with the same team.
ComparisonThe 2017 draft produced a deep safety class. The four 1st-rounders:
- Jamal Adams (#6, NYJ): moved twice (NYJ → SEA → TEN), now a fringe roster player - Malik Hooker (#15, IND): Cowboys since 2021, on his third Dallas contract - Marcus Williams (#42, NO/2nd-rd actually): moved to BAL, was waived - Budda Baker (#36, ARI/2nd-rd actually): still in Arizona
Among the true first-rounders, Hooker is the only one to have rebounded from a major injury and re-established himself on a second team. Five years as a Cowboy after the Achilles tear is the resilience story of that class.
