Brown was the 7th overall pick in 2020 out of Auburn. His career has three acts: early rotational dominance (2020-2022), an All-Pro breakout (2023), and a comeback after a Week 1 meniscus tear in 2024 ended his year before it began.

2025 is the rebound: 5 sacks, 12 QB hits, 36 tackles in 17 games — career-high sack total and a return to the pressure-rate profile from 2023.

2023: 7 TFLs, 15 QB hits, and an AP second-team All-Pro nod as the league's best run-defending DT.

Milestone

Brown's 2023 was the season the breakthrough finally matched the draft slot: 47 solo tackles, 7 TFLs, 15 QB hits, 6 PDs. He led the NFL in run-stop rate among interior DLs (per PFF) and got the AP All-Pro second team vote.

The surrounding numbers tell the story: Carolina's defense allowed 3.8 YPC with Brown on the field in 2023, the lowest among teams whose top interior DL played 70%+ of snaps. His pressure rate also hit a career high without the sack totals that usually come with it — he's the prototypical "sets-up-others" interior force.

Week 1 of 2024: meniscus tear on his very first game back. Zero stats for the entire year.

Anomaly

Brown's 2024 line is 1 game, 0 tackles, 0 of anything. He tore the meniscus in his right knee in the Week 1 loss to New Orleans, was placed on IR within 48 hours, and didn't play another snap that season.

The injury was particularly painful because Brown had just signed a 4-year, $96M extension in May 2024 — the highest-value contract for an interior DL in Panthers history at the time. He played one snap on the new deal before the year ended.

2025 became the answer: 17 of 17 games played, no missed time, and the career-high sack total to prove the knee held up.

His 2025 sack total (5.0) is more than his 2020-2022 combined (6.0) — pressure finally became sacks.

For most of Brown's career, the QB-hit-to-sack ratio was brutal: 6-12 hits per sack while everyone around him converted. Through 2023, he had 13 career sacks on 62 QB hits — a 4.8x ratio, well above the typical 2.5-3x for interior DLs.

2025 fixed that: 5 sacks on 12 QB hits — a 2.4x ratio, the first time the finishing rate matched the pressure profile. The difference is that he's playing through contact and finishing instead of just collapsing pockets for teammates.

151 career tackles + 33 TFLs + 60 QB hits — interior DL volume without the sack glamour.

Comparison

Brown's career line through 6 seasons: 151 solo tackles, 33 TFLs, 13 sacks, 60 QB hits, 28 PDs. Among interior DLs drafted in the top-10 since 2018, that puts him 2nd in QB hits behind Quinnen Williams.

The contrast: Williams has nearly 3x the sack total (38.5 to 13.0) on similar QB-hit volume. The reason is partly scheme (Jets often slant Williams to a 1-gap rusher) and partly Brown's role as a two-gap NT/3T for Carolina — eating doubles, freeing edges.

If 2025's 2.4x hit-to-sack rate holds, Brown's career path becomes a lot more interesting in years 7-10. Pressure was never the question.
