Isaiah McDuffie

LB · Packers

A 6th-round pick who becomes a legitimate rotational contributor five years later is the exception, not the rule — teams can spend those dollars on premium positions because the LB room handles itself.

6th-round special-teamer → 5-year Packer with 160 career tackles.

McDuffie was a 6th-rounder (No. 220) out of Boston College in 2021 — a teams-first depth ILB project. He played 1 defensive tackle as a rookie, then 19 in Year 2, then exploded into a real role.

The career arc is the kind teams quietly love: 48 → 42 → 50 tackles the last three years, with TFLs every season (5, 3, 3) and steady sack production (0.5, 1.0, 1.0). The cheap end of the LB depth chart, paying off year after year.

Why it matters. A 6th-round pick who becomes a legitimate rotational contributor five years later is the exception, not the rule — teams can spend those dollars on premium positions because the LB room handles itself.

Year 5 and still the top producer: only 2021 R4-7 LB with 50 tackles in 2025.

11 linebackers were drafted in rounds 4-7 of the 2021 class. In Year 5 (2025), only Isaiah McDuffie cleared 20 tackles. His 50 is 4.5x more than the next active classmate (K.J. Britt at 11).

Five of his 11 draft-class peers at the position are below 10 tackles in 2025 or out of the league entirely. McDuffie didn't just survive — he's the last man standing producing at scale.

Why it matters. Longevity at the second level is a roster-construction lever: late-round starters who stick free up cap for the skill positions that actually scale salary.

Years 1-2: 20 tackles total. Years 3-5: 140 tackles. The role flipped after 2022.

Split

McDuffie's career, two halves

SpanTklTFLPD
Years 1-2 (2021-22)2000
Years 3-5 (2023-25)140116

McDuffie spent his first two seasons as a dedicated special-teamer — 20 defensive tackles and 0 TFLs across 35 games. After De'Vondre Campbell's departure cleared the depth chart in 2023, McDuffie stepped in and produced:

- 140 tackles in 3 years - 11 TFLs (all post-2022) - 6 PDs - 2.5 sacks

The pattern is the classic late-round LB who waits his turn and then doesn't give the snap back.

Why it matters. A 7x jump in three-year production is the signal teams look for in depth pieces — the role opened once, and he locked it down rather than ceding snaps back.

Only 6th-round LB (2019-2022 class) to log 160 career tackles with one team.

Rare

6th-7th round LBs (2019-2022) with 100+ career tackles

Among all linebackers drafted in rounds 6-7 between 2019 and 2022, just four accumulated 100+ career tackles. Only McDuffie did it without changing teams.

The others — Elliss, Long, Crowder — all bounced through multiple franchises to accumulate their numbers. McDuffie's 160 tackles and $9.5M extension came entirely in Green Bay, which tells you something about the Packers' assessment of his value.

Why it matters. A 6th-rounder who earns an extension and stays five seasons is the kind of roster depth that separates well-run organizations — one team saw enough to keep investing while the equivalents shuffled elsewhere.

McDuffie's 2023-25 production (140 tkl / 11 TFL / 2.5 sacks) is 2x any 2021 late-round LB peer.

From 2023 through 2025, the 2021 5th-7th round LB class had seven active players. McDuffie's cumulative production over those three seasons — 140 tackles, 11 TFLs, 2.5 sacks — is more than double the next-closest peer in tackles (K.J. Britt, 63).

TFLs and sacks amplify the gap further: the entire rest of the class combined for 4.5 sacks and 8 TFLs across 2023-25. McDuffie alone matched that with room to spare.

Why it matters. Dominating a draft-class comparison across multiple stat categories isn't luck — it's the signal that one player found a sustainable role while everyone else cycled out.

One player, one-third of his class: McDuffie's TFLs and sacks dwarf the rest of the 2021 late-round LBs combined.

The 2021 rounds 5-7 linebacker class had 8 players. Across 2023-2025, one of them — Isaiah McDuffie — nearly matched all seven others in tackles (140 vs 160 combined), while outpacing them entirely in pass-rush production: 11 TFLs to their 8, and 2.5 sacks to their combined 0.5.

On TFLs: McDuffie (11) beats the group (8) alone. On sacks: McDuffie's 2.5 is 5x the entire class combined (0.5). One 6th-rounder, running the same defense in Green Bay for three years, out-pressured seven peers who spread across the league.

Why it matters. When one player nearly matches seven peers in tackling while tripling them in TFLs and quintupling them in sacks, the depth chart math isn't even close — the Packers found the outlier in the group.
