Sean Tucker

RB · Buccaneers

UDFA backs rarely survive roster cuts, let alone grow into a team's primary short-yardage weapon — Tucker's expansion from depth piece to 86-carry red-zone hammer in three seasons is a genuine anomaly for his draft class. The fact that each carry surge coincided with starter injuries shows he held his job through performance, not just circumstance.

From 3-game cup of coffee to 86-carry workload in three seasons.

Tucker went undrafted out of Syracuse in 2023 and made the Bucs as a depth back. The arc is steep: 15 carries as a rookie, 50 as a sophomore, 86 in 2025 — and the touchdown total exploded to 7 rushing TDs in 2025 alone, after just 2 in his first two years combined.

The 2025 line is more goal-line hammer than feature back — 3.7 yards per carry on 86 totes, but 7 trips into the end zone. His carry total nearly doubled each season because Tampa's incumbent backs (Rachaad White, Bucky Irving) kept absorbing injuries, forcing the coaching staff to expand his role rather than replace him — and he kept converting the extra work into touchdowns.

Why it matters.

2024 ran on explosion (6.2 YPC). 2025 is grind-it-out volume (3.7 YPC).

The 2024 sample was small (50 carries) but 6.2 YPC is elite. With more volume in 2025 (86 carries) the efficiency collapsed to 3.7 YPC — a sign the role shifted from change-of-pace burner to short-yardage / goal-line back.

The reward: 7 rushing TDs in 2025 on a 3.7 YPC line says he's becoming Tampa's red-zone hammer rather than its big-play threat.

Why it matters. The efficiency-to-volume inversion shows two completely different versions of the same player: the 2024 Tucker was a big-play threat who happened to get 50 carries, while the 2025 Tucker is a deliberate short-yardage weapon whose value comes from converting inside the 5-yard line, not running free in open space.

Week 11, 2025 vs Buffalo: 19 carries, 106 yards, 2 rush TDs + 1 receiving TD.

Rare

Tucker's biggest workload of the 2025 season was a true workhorse line: 19 carries for 106 yards and 2 rushing TDs against the Bills, plus a receiving TD. 3 total TDs in one game — the only 3-TD performance of his NFL career.

It was just the second 100-yard rushing game of his career (after the 136-yard NO game), and the first time he carried the ball more than 14 times in an NFL game.

Why it matters. Putting up 3 TDs against the Bills' top-10 defense is the kind of game that cements a player's identity — Tucker went from 'depth piece who fills in when starters get hurt' to 'guy the Bucs trust to win close games with the ball in his hands in short yardage.' That shift in coaching trust is worth more than the stat line.

7 rushing TDs in 2025 — more than the entire previous two seasons combined.

Through 2023-2024 Tucker had 2 rushing TDs total across 20 games. In 2025 alone he ran in 7 TDs in 17 games — a 3.5x jump in scoring rate on roughly the same per-game carry workload.

The profile flipped: 2024 was the efficiency season, 2025 is the touchdown season. The Bucs found a use case (short-yardage red-zone work) where he doesn't need to break a long one to be valuable.

Why it matters. A 3.5x jump in touchdown rate without a commensurate jump in carries means the Bucs made a deliberate decision to give Tucker the ball specifically in scoring situations — a coaching trust upgrade that's more meaningful than raw volume and signals he's entrenched as their goal-line back going forward.
